A history of Columbus Day in the USA is here. Lots of people like to downplay Columbus' voyage by saying that the Vikings were here first, that he found America by "accident", or that he was an evil conqueror who brought disease to the native Americans.
For anyone who wants to discount what Columbus did, I have one question for you: Have you discovered anything at all? I didn't think so. So shut it. Columbus undertook a hazardous voyage and brought the new world to the forefront of the European mind. What have you done lately?
