Veterans Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Here's a good video of The Old Guard at Arlington.

  1. Maybe this is just a sign of old age - but I remember knowing quite a few WWI veterans - even one who was on the German side - It just was not that long ago in the scheme of things. So let us remember Armistice Day as well. "The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" and here we remember it in the one hundredth eleventh year although it has not yet been one hundred years since 1918.
