Sunday Morning Open Thread

Adios, Daylight Savings Time.

On a somber note, former Federal Judge Karen Williams, a native of Orangeburg, SC, passed away yesterday morning. She was a pioneer in the legal world, and she'll be missed.

In other legal news, the race for South Carolina's Chief Justice is getting closer. Could a wild card be in the works?

Ok. Time to face the day. But first, coffee...

  1. Open thread, eh? This means I can say you are WRONG about the single space after a sentence here. And wrong you are. You can hit that space bar as many times as you like and html is still going to only see one space. (What? You didn't see all those spaces?

The only place where multiple spaces after a sentence matters is in print. And, in print, unless you are using a monospaced font like Courier, it doesn't matter *too* much. When using a proportional font, it's actually best (IMHO) to go ahead and hit that spacebar twice. Kerning (if you're using a good editor) will know what to do with it.

And if you are stranded on a desert island with only a manual typewriter, you'd best use those two spaces!!

IOW -- if you hit the space bar only once between sentences, it looks bad under certain circumstances. If you hit it twice, it looks pretty durn good under all circumstances.

  2. Slight correction to the above -- if you are setting type for an old-fashioned print newspaper or magazine using an editor that recognizes a space bar hit as a *hard* space AND is justifying the type, then use one space after a sentence. I just can't imagine where/how that might happen these days.

  3. You should check the MLA and the Chicago Manual of Style. Both indicate ONE space.
