Happy Friday.
Ok, no more icky politics or boring graphs of economic stuff. Time for something fun. It's time to play "Guess the Gun" (Movie Edition)
This gun comes to us from Saving Private Ryan. It is seen here held by Edward Burns (Reiben) as the squad marches through France after D-Day:
Remember, no using Google! Answer below the jump.
Give up? It's a Browning Automatic Rifle, or BAR for short.
The Browning Automatic Rifle |
The BAR was issued as the sole automatic fire support for a twelve man squad, and all men were trained at the basic level how to operate and fire the weapon in case the designated operator(s) were killed or wounded.
At the start of WWII, most infantry companies designated two or three-man BAR teams, a gunner and one or two assistant gunners who carried extra magazines. By 1944, some units were using one-man BAR teams, with the other riflemen in the squad detailed to carry the additional thirty-cal ammunition.
Enjoy your weekend.
