I think the Sage of Monticello got it right, and (in my opinion) it still holds today. JEFFERSON ON THE QUALITIES OF NORTHERNERS AND SOUTHERNERS

sober	voluptuary
laborious	indolent
persevering	unsteady

jealous of their own liberties, and just to those of others	zealous for their own liberties, but trampling on those of others.
