Top Five Sports Movies Ever (With Iconic Scenes)

You were expecting a post about last night's debate? Sorry campers, if you want to get post-game analysis on the two bozos running for President, you'll have to go elsewhere. Neither of them really merit discussion beyond the fact that they're both unqualified to be President.

So, on to things that really merit good faith argument and debate: The top five sports movies of All-Time

First of all, there are a lot of great sports movies out there, so it's hard to come up with a top five list, as is normally done, High Fidelity style. But as they say, this is not 'Nam, there are rules. Otherwise, mark it zero, dude.

So here are the top five. Rules are only one movie per sport. Place them in any order you like, and I'd be happy, but you've got to go with some kind of order. If I'm looking for something to watch, and I come across one of these movies, I stop. And yeah, all these movies are sentimental feel-good movies, because that's what good sports movies are. As always, if you disagree, let me know.

1. Rudy. Sorry, haters. I'm a sucker for underdog stories, and sports movies are chock-full of them. If you don't notice that room gets a bit dusty when after all the rejections, he finally gets into Notre Dame, you've got a cold heart. BONUS: Early Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau before they were famous from Swingers.

2. A League of Their Own. The're no crying in baseball. I mean, it's Tom Hanks, Gena Davis, Jon Lovitz (in a vastly underappreciated supporting role) and many more. Hanks and Davis carry this movie, but mostly it's Hanks.

Iconic Scene:

3. Caddyshack. It's the golf movie to end all golf movies. Eminently quotable, classic stereotypes, and a great performance by Bill Murray makes this an easy pick.

Iconic Scene: He's about 455 yards away, he's gonna hit about a 2-iron, I think. (Love it.)

4. Cinderella Man. From one "Cinderella story" to the next, right? I'm not putting any of the Rocky movies on the list because first, they're a bit obvious. Second, this is a better movie than any of the Rocky movies. It combines the underdog story of Rocky with vastly superior acting from Russell Crowe, (sorry Sly) and it's based on a true story.

5. The World's Fastest Indian. Yeah, this is my sleeper pick. But like any good fantasy team, you've got to pick a good late round sleeper that everyone else overlooks. For my money, you can't really pass up Sir Anthony Hopkins in the role of New Zealander Burt Munro, who builds a pretty speedy little motorcycle.

Here's the trailer, since you might not recognize the movie pick.

  1. Interesting picks. I may try and watch Sir Anthony on a two wheeler...
