This is really sad. The worst part is that it was entirely preventable. If you want to clean your firearm (and you should) make sure the damn thing is unloaded.
My guess is that since pulling the bullet from a muzzeloader is somewhat involved that he may have intentionally fired it into the air to clear it. Not really likely that it was an accidental discharge.
Of course, he might also be muslim and accustomed to promiscuously firing his weapon into the air.

In my personal opinion, intentionally firing into the air is a negligent discharge. Just fire into a berm so you know where your round goes.
