Sporting Clays Open Thread

I'll be breaking some clays this afternoon, so y'all will have to talk among yourselves. If you're good, I'll bring you some more content later tonight.

Possible topics for discussion:
  1. MSNBC host doesn't know what Animal Farm is about. English teachers everywhere shake their collective heads.
  2. 2.45 Million enrollees didn't pay their Obamacare premiums. Oh, you mean this insurance stuff costs money? Who knew?
  3. Abortion Bill advances through SC Legislature. This will bring South Carolina almost into line with certain highly conservative, oppressive regimes that have a 14 week abortion cutoff.....like France.

As always, you can follow me on Christian Mingle.

Top Headlines Thread (Russian Toilet Instructions Edition)

FRIDAY!

Here's a look around at the top five headlines I'm seeing today:

1. Jay Leno Says Farewell to the "Tonight Show": After a long run, he's finally leaving. I've seen plenty of criticism of Leno from people who say he's really dull, but I always thought he was pretty funny. My guess is he'll find some way to keep telling jokes for a living.

2. Charleston School of Law to Possibly Merge With the College of Charleston?: It appears that the State Legislature gets the final say on whether the Charleston School of Law can be sold to a private group, and that's not a sure thing. Accordingly the College of Charleston is looking into it. Law Schools can be quite a cash cow, since they don't require much overhead and rake in tuition dollars.

3. SC Legislature has Bill to Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks: If I remember correctly, this was the same thing proposed in Texas that (by her opposition) propelled Wendy Davis to the forefront of national politics. Could we see a similar phenomenon here in South Carolina? If so, which state legislator is the most likely to be the face of the opposition to this law?

4. Four Ways Obamacare Hurts Millennials: Spoiler alert -- Young people are helping pay for the older, sicker people's coverage.

5. Want to Buy a Gun? Be Glad You Don't Live In Massachusetts: Hey, it could be worse. I hear China has some pretty tough restrictions on guns as well.

Yeah, yeah yeah...the Winter Olympics are starting, too. I guess that's news. The real news is all the problems that are going on with the logistics. Russia is weird, though. Here is a sign that is above toilets in Russian Hotels

What's that on the bottom left? Do some people fish in toilets? Is this a Russian thing? I also like the bottom right one. Is that guy doing "air drums" on the toilet with a beer bottle?

That's all I got for some Friday AM links.

Actor Phillip Seymor Hoffman Found Dead of Apparent Heroin Overdose

Ace has a good point about the debate over drug legalization. Basically, his point is that the choices are a binary set of two choices:
1. Drugs are bad, and therefore must be illegal; or,
2. Drugs are fine, and therefore should be legal, and it's ok to do drugs.
Ace notes that you don't really see a more (dare I say) "nuanced" argument for: Drugs can be legal, yet they're pretty dangerous, so maybe you shouldn't do them.

As usual, Ace is right.

In all of the argument for legalization of marijuana in Colorado, we aren't really seeing anyone say that maybe it's ok to have legalized pot, but maybe we shouldn't be such big cheerleaders for it without the counterbalancing argument of "Maybe we shouldn't smoke pot all the time".

As events like Hoffman's death remind us, drug use has some negative consequences. Yes, this was heroin, not pot, but still, with all this marijuana legalization talk, I'm not hearing about any negative consequences. That's not good.

Remember the line Bill Clinton had about abortion? He said it should be "Safe, legal, and rare"which is a kind of third way of approaching the abortion issue. It's not the cheerleading stance of "Yay abortion", and it's not the prohibitionist stance of "never". He took the path of let's keep it legal, but let's discourage it culturally and socially.

I think that's the right path for some drug legalization. The problem is that we aren't seeing anyone of the legalization side of the argument call for restraint, or rarity in drug use.

Wendy Davis: Blissfully Ignorant

Wendy Davis, the newest champion of the pro-choice movement gave a speech to the National Press Club in DC yesterday. Following her speech, she was asked a question about her position on abortion related to the atrocities that went on with Kermit Gosnell in performing very late-term abortions.
Davis didn't answer the question. "I don't know what happened in the Gosnell case," she told me.
Remember, this woman was talking about wanting to be Governor of Texas. I guess she's just decided that being willfully ignorant of current events is a good strategy for her going forward. I'm sure she can put her experience in not knowing about things to work as Governor of Texas.

However, in all fairness to Ms. Davis, I don't think that abortion is really an issue she's focused on.

Abortion Clinics are Now "Choice Providers"

I have some breaking news for all you wordsmiths out there. Abortion clinics are now to be referred to as "Choice Providers". Wow, talk about some Orwellian doublespeak.

Who would advocate for this wording? An abortion advocate?

Actually no. Good guess, though. Give up?

A television news anchor wants to rename abortion clinics as "choice providers". You know, the guy who's supposed to just present facts in an objective way?

Hey, maybe I'll name one of my pistols "Choice Provider".

Euphemism: the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant; also : the expression so substituted.

Since I like to come up with lists, and since we're renaming abortion clinics, I have a proposed list of some other names we could give to abortion clinics:
  1. Gosnell Chapels
  2. Murderholes
  3. Infanticide by Dismemberment 'R Us
  4. Kid Killers Express
  5.  Suction Centers
I guess the problem is that there's really no way to put a happy face on killing a person. It's going to kind of be ugly. So I get why they don't want to talk about it.

Let's Talk About Abortion

If you haven't noticed, Texas does things a little differently than other states. I referenced this in yesterday's humorous post. On a more serious note, Texas has also made the news recently with a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks. This bill was opposed by Texas Democrats, and notably, by a Texas Senator named Wendy Davis, who sparked a #StandWithWendy following on Twitter last night with her filibuster of the bill.

I know that people on both sides are very passionate about abortion, and that many people are very uncomfortable discussing the issue at all. It's not something dusty and dry like economic theory. We're not talking about tariffs and international trade. It's an intensely personal and moral issue that goes to the core of our being.

So, having said all that, I'm going to tee it up for discussion here, and if nothing else, put my thoughts out there on the Texas Bill and a 20 week rule. This is the internet - strong opinions come with the territory.

First of all, this is a tough world and people have to make tough choices at times, but what we are talking about here - an abortion after 20 weeks - is terminating a viable infant. I think there is a certain reasonable ground in which abortions can be performed, but that time is not very long. For instance, one of the big questions that are put to pro-life folks is What about the case of a woman who becomes pregnant through rape? Let's talk about that:

First, I'm fine with exceptions. I don't fall into either camp of: (a) abortions for all women, all the time, right up until the baby is born or (b) no abortions, ever. This issue isn't one that lends itself to either one of those solutions. So let's talk about a common exception that gets brought up: rape.

In the case of a woman who become pregnant through rape, I don't think that she is going to wait twenty weeks to make a decision about whether or not she wants an abortion. Why on earth would she wait that long? My guess is that she would make the decision as soon as she realized that she was pregnant, not four months later. No fact is going to change between week 4 and week 20. Basically, I think it's such an odd hypothetical as to not really merit much consideration. It's just a little too hypothetical and out of touch with reality for me. If you're raped, and get pregnant: have an abortion before week 20. Why?

For me, when I think of a 20 week old, I naturally think of what my child was like at 20 weeks. He had developed a head, lungs, all of his limbs, he had developed his sex, and distinct chambers of his heart. He was moving around. That's what you have at 20 weeks. It's not theoretical - it's a child. At 20 weeks, he was my child.

To me, the best evidence of how awful late-term abortion is the fog of language that we use to describe it. It's almost entirely euphemisms that minimize the act. To specifically and accurately describe what actually happens in a late term abortion is to condemn it.

Women have rights to control their body. But again, you can't take everything to the extreme. For instance, my rights end when I punch you in the face. I can't do that. With abortion, it's the same principle. People who advocate for late-term abortion are advocating destroying a viable human being. If your response to that is that you value the rights of a mother more than the rights of a late-term infant, my guess is that you're not a parent.

Anyway, I'm probably going to make some people mad with this post, but that's not my intention. I'm just putting my thoughts out there to get people thinking. By the way, random fact: the hard-right country of France has a 12 week window for abortions. So Texas is proposing to give women an addition 8 weeks longer than France does.

Susan G. Komen Fund Breaks Ties With Planned Parenthood

UPDATE: Komen Fund changes their mind, begs forgiveness, will continue to fund PP. That was fairly short-lived. I wonder if they'll refund the money to all the pro-life people who donated to Komen in the last 24 hours...

Here's the problem I have with most liberals: If you don't support their pet causes with your money, you're the enemy.
Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, has depicted Stearns’ probe as politically motivated and said she was dismayed that it had contributed to Komen’s decision to halt the grants to PPFA affiliates.

“It’s hard to understand how an organization with whom we share a mission of saving women’s lives could have bowed to this kind of bullying,” Richards told The Associated Press. “It’s really hurtful.”
Planned Parenthood has the mission of "saving women's lives"? That's news to me. I thought abortion was kind of...the opposite of that.
