“It’s hard to argue that opposing marriage equality is a central tenet of Christianity when majorities of Christian voters support same-sex marriage.”

Says Sally Kohn, writing in The Daily Beast.

Whoa! Same-sex marriage and government's role in it aside, when did the central tenets of Christianity become determined by poll results? Did I miss a meeting where the Pope decided that Christianity's tenets would just be whatever the poll numbers showed most Christians wanted to go with?

I'm pretty sure Moses didn't take poll of all the Israelites when he came down off Mt. Sinai and saw them worshiping the golden calf.

You know, I read these kinds of pieces, and it's obvious that the kulturkampf war is over on this issue. However, unsatisfied with claiming the field, the victors are now in full "mop-up" duty, going around and humiliating and shooting the survivors on the other side.

Hey World! Shape Up! You're Disappointing Obama!

In a recent poll of current US Presidents, the world's approval rating has drastically slipped given recent events. In fact, the poll results revealed that the current President expressed "disappointment" when asked about the rest of the world.
"The profile [of President Obama] that I published in the New Yorker was somebody that eerily, eerily seemed to be claiming himself--it was a sense of not giving up, but of deep frustration--that was the profile that I published in the New Yorker. Somebody frustrated and disappointed," said Remnick, who has proven to be deeply sympathetic to this president.

"And that's what's frustrating to me sometimes about Obama is that the world seems to disappoint him," he continued to laughter from others on the TV set. "Republicans disappoint him, Bashar al-Assad disappoints him, Putin as well. And the fighting spirit sometimes is lacking in the performative aspects of the presidency."
I can't say that I really feel bad for the President. You know, the world disappoints me constantly. The world disappoints everyone constantly. Part of becoming a grownup is realizing that it has always been ever so and then moving on with life anyway.

Huh...seems like he's frustrated with everyone who doesn't do exactly what he wants. What did he expect - that the whole world would just adore him and do whatever he said?

Grow up, Mr. President.

AP Poll Has Obama at 37% Approval Rating

I'm not sure if this is an outlier or a solid number. Either way, it's not good for the President. Yes, Congress is polling at 5%. No, that doesn't really matter, because we kind of expect our Congressmen to behave like morons. As long as they can hook us up with a tour of the Capitol and avoid getting into a scandal where they're caught doing cocaine off an underage Chilean prostitute's backside, we're pretty happy.

I mean, at this point, getting hit in the head with a brick probably has a higher approval rating than Congress. I'm not absolving our Congressional folks, but let's face it, they don't really have anything to lose at this point.

But we kind of expect more from the President that we do from Congress. We expect him to be a leader. We expect him to get things done, even when there is opposition. He's supposed to be in charge. We expect him to be, you know, Presidential.

If this 37% number is correct, and I'm not sure it is, this has to be close to rock bottom for him. There has to be at least 30-something percent of people out there who will support him no matter what. The next big movement is going to be on or just before October 17. The Democrats are predicting Armageddon, global depression, and and mass chaos if the debt ceiling isn't raised by then.

If that day comes and goes (and nothing happens) I think we'll see the Democrats do some talking. Now, I'm not saying that nothing will happen, but based on all the dire predictions from the Democrats about sequestration (now proven false) let's just say I'm skeptical that it's going to be the end of the world.

Sen. Lindsey Graham is in Trouble

I shared this on Twitter earlier, but I thought I should post it here for those of you who aren't Twitter-inclined. If you haven't been paying attention, Lindsey Graham is in big trouble for his reelection this fall. How much trouble?

Clemson political science professor Dave Woodard conducted the poll last week and found only 31 percent of South Carolina's Republicans plan to vote to re-elect Graham, regardless of who else was in the race.
For those of you not familiar with math, that's bad. Further down, the article cites Richard Quinn who is critical of the methodology that Woodard uses. That may or may not be a fair criticism. As Quinn notes, he doesn't know what methodology was used.

For comparison's sake, a Landmark/Rosetta Stone poll has Senator Graham up by a comfortable margin in the primary. However you slice it, I don't think Senator Graham is going to coast to reelection in a state known for long-term senators.

Who is the Chief Justice?

If you said "John Roberts", you're in the 28%. This is an amazing chart:

I can certainly believe that 53% of people don't know who the Chief Justice is. I totally buy that. What I cannot fathom is 8% of people who think Thurgood Marshall is the current Chief Justice. He's dead. Has been for awhile. Also, was never the Chief. But hey, you at least named a Justice.

The people who answered with "Harry Reid" should not be allowed to vote. Or we could deport them. Yeah, let's just deport them. They probably wouldn't know the difference.

New Poll: President's Approval Numbers Solid

Wait...upon further review, conclusive polling evidence shows the numbers going the other way.

Right now the President's numbers are about as solid as a Chic-fil-A milkshake. And before you get mad at me, that's not my opinion; the LA Times is saying it. Don't shoot the messenger, bro. The money quote:
Strong support among liberal Democrats for Obama's jobs record has plummeted 22 points from 53% down below a third. African Americans who believe the president's measures helped the economy have plunged from 77% to barely half. Obama's overall job approval on the economy has slid below 40% for the first time, with 57% disapproving. And strong disapprovers outnumber approvers by better than two-to-one.
I'm no expert, but that sounds bad.
