Robin Williams: All Too Ordinary

You probably have already seen the news yesterday that Robin Williams died in what appears to be a suicide. Obviously, the man was a legendary comedian and actor. Whatever word you want to use: genius, icon, force of nature, etc. Robin Williams was it. Having the ability to stand up in front of a group of people all by yourself and make them laugh is a terribly hard thing to do, and he did it with ease.

He also played serious roles, which is something that most comedians attempt, but few succeed at. His roles in Good Will Hunting, Dead Poet's Society, and August Rush were all great characters in which he didn't play his typical comedic role.

Even some of his comedic roles had depth to them. For instance, on the surface, Good Morning Vietnam allowed Williams to have fun with his character, but the movie also addressed the more serious and darker side of war. (As an aside, this is my favorite scene from that movie.)

Although everyone will likely be writing something along the lines of what I just wrote and remembering their favorite scenes or bits, it's important to remember that this extraordinary man was afflicted with depression, which is all too common.

For some unknown reason, even though Williams was capable of giving so much joy and laughter to millions of people throughout his career, there was something dark inside him that he couldn't escape. It's important to remember that there are so many ordinary people out there who face this same pain every day. People die from depression, and although their deaths don't make the newscasts, their deaths are no less tragic.

Accordingly, while we should take this moment to celebrate and remember the extraordinary work of a man who was a true one-of-a-kind, we should also remember that the depression that he suffered from is all too ordinary.

Hey World! Shape Up! You're Disappointing Obama!

In a recent poll of current US Presidents, the world's approval rating has drastically slipped given recent events. In fact, the poll results revealed that the current President expressed "disappointment" when asked about the rest of the world.
"The profile [of President Obama] that I published in the New Yorker was somebody that eerily, eerily seemed to be claiming himself--it was a sense of not giving up, but of deep frustration--that was the profile that I published in the New Yorker. Somebody frustrated and disappointed," said Remnick, who has proven to be deeply sympathetic to this president.

"And that's what's frustrating to me sometimes about Obama is that the world seems to disappoint him," he continued to laughter from others on the TV set. "Republicans disappoint him, Bashar al-Assad disappoints him, Putin as well. And the fighting spirit sometimes is lacking in the performative aspects of the presidency."
I can't say that I really feel bad for the President. You know, the world disappoints me constantly. The world disappoints everyone constantly. Part of becoming a grownup is realizing that it has always been ever so and then moving on with life anyway.

Huh...seems like he's frustrated with everyone who doesn't do exactly what he wants. What did he expect - that the whole world would just adore him and do whatever he said?

Grow up, Mr. President.

Assault Weapons Ban Shot Down By Democrats

When we last left the senior senator from California, she was being ruthlessly overwhelmed by a simple legal question from the junior senator from Texas, which left her sputtering and unable to respond in any logical, relevant manner.

Now, it appears that her own party has abandoned her. (After seeing her performance, can you really blame them?) The senate majority leader has decided not to include Feinstein's assault weapons ban in the gun control package that he will bring to the floor for discussion.
After a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday, a frustrated Feinstein said she learned that the bill she sponsored — which bans 157 different models of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines — wouldn’t be part of a Democratic gun bill to be offered on the Senate floor. Instead, it can be offered as an amendment. But its exclusion from the package makes what was already an uphill battle an almost certain defeat.
We can expect lots of whining from the gun control crowd, and I'm sure they'll be very upset about all this. Just so you don't think I'm all heartless, I've got a "cheer you up" picture below the "Read More" jump for any person who's having a bad day. Senator Feinstien, you're welcome to click as well.

Sportsmanship

It showed up yesterday.

It's horrible to see bad things happen to good people. In addition to being an All-American football player, Marcus Lattimore is an All-American nice guy. He worked so hard to get back from last year's knee injury, which makes this injury seem so much worse. The guy just can't catch a break. I was at the game, and it felt like the entire game came to a stop, and no one cared about the score. Lots of things are more important than football, and this moment illustrated it.

The most important thing in recovering from an injury is never to lose heart. I don't know if that's true, but I'd like to believe it.

Happy Halloween to Sad Clemson Fan

Happy Halloween from PP to the sad Clemson fan in Atlanta. Keep that pumpkin-chin up, bro. You just need to beat Wake Forest to clinch your division. No problem. You've got it in "the bag". Right?
