my very first car was a 1959 Fiat 500 Cabriolet, and so was my second. Did not see much Abarth here then in the early 60s- but you did see the Bianchina - Back then the 500s for the American market had special Bugeye headlamps to meet our highway regulations and they were fantastic lights - 12 volts back when VW was still running 6 volts. It also had fantastic brakes, the rear mounted engine was aircooled 2 cylinders upright, not boxer and it had a transaxle with swing axles. Oliver Motor Company at the north and east corner of Main and Elmwood was the dealer as well as being the Chrysler dealer.

ReplyDeleteI did some research on this thing - it turns out that the engine for it is manufactured by the Obama Motor Company (Chrysler) in Detroit.
ReplyDeleteThere is no ad that could make me buy one of those.
