Co-Sleeping With Your Baby

The Milwaukee Health Department runs an ad that says sleeping with your baby is like sleeping with a knife. Overdoing it a little?

This is clearly based on anecdotal evidence, but you can base anything on anecdotal evidence. I'm sure the Milwaukee Health Department has all their other problems solved, so they've moved on to the real problems of moms who sleep with their babies.

  1. This is one of those things that depends. It depends on the parents AND the baby. While I admit to having slept with Mrs. Permanent Press many times while she was an infant, I never did it in a bed. I can be a very sound sleeper and her father was also. It wasn't a big deal when she was an infant but it was something I didn't want to do.

(I don't want to make it sound like Mrs. Permanent Press is old or anything, but lots of things weren't a big deal when she was born that are now.)

What I did do could be considered just as dangerous. We slept together with me sitting on the couch or in a chair. I could so easily have dropped her from the chair or slumped over on top of her on the couch.

The point is that parents of a newborn are going to be sleep-deprived and they are going to do things that "endanger" their child (in someone's opinion) no matter how careful they are.

Not only that... almost every parent (of a newborn or of a 30-something-year-old) tries their best to provide comfort and ease to their child. This does not always work, dammit.
