Choose Your Weapon

Friday at the range:
Left to Right: 9mm FN Hi-Power; .45 Colt Peacemaker; Ruger .22 Target Pistol
The Hi-Power is the practical self-defense pistol. The Ruger .22 is a great plinking gun with a nice site. I could shoot this all day. For real fun, the single-action, cowboy-style Colt Peacemaker is an authentic period piece. It shoots the .45 longs, not the .45 ACP. Nice to shoot, but not something I would take to the range every single day. It's like the old convertible that you only drive on nice days.

My shooting partner beat me in all three competitions today. I really need to get to the range more.

NOTE: All firearms were manually cleared, and visually inspected prior to taking this picture.

  1. sigh.

Have you never read the accounts of "Black Jack" Pershing and the actions against the Moros ? (Do you know the real nickname of John Joseph Pershing?)

Have you read the accounts of Alfred B. Williams of the Deliverance of South Carolina in 1876 ? Williams states that no gentleman would carry less than a .44 caliber pistol.

That 9 is only suitable for firing promiscuously and ineffectively.

My gosh man, the French use a 9mm.

  2. The age old debate of 9mm vs. a .45 for stopping an attacker.... Looking at ballistic models, a 9mm with modern JHP is sufficient to stop an attacker; FMJ, that's another story.

  3. The Colt Peacemaker is a gun that I not only understand but also one that I can operate on instinct.

Of the three, it would be my weapon of choice were I forced to choose.

I understand fully that I am dependent on those around me to defend me. That is why I support the 2nd Amendment. My hands are too weak to work a slide, but the tremor in them should keep at least three miscreants at bay if I'm armed with something similar to the Colt. :-)

All teasing aside, I wouldn't be the worst person to put with a long gun and a nest from which I could "sight" it. Though my hands may shake, I am not prone to panic.

  4. Good point about racking the slide. Also, to Redshirt's point, if you put a .45 caliber size hole in someone, it will encourage them to slow down very quickly.
